Today, we’ll focus on the wednesday breakfast special upma. Continuing our journey of quick breakfast ideas, today we’ll talk about Upma, a wholesome and flavorful dish made from semolina. It’s light, healthy, and loaded with vegetables, making it the perfect start to your day. Let’s dive into the step-by-step preparation!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semolina (rava)
  • 3 cups water (use the same cup for measuring)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or butter
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
  • Curry leaves (a few)
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 1 green chili (chopped, optional)
  • Mixed vegetables (peas, carrot, capsicum)
  • 1 tablespoon groundnuts (roasted)
  • Coriander leaves (for garnish)
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: Cashews or other dry fruits for extra richness

Step-by-Step Preparation:

  1. Roast the Semolina:
  2. Heat 1 teaspoon ghee or butter in a pan. Add 1 cup of semolina and roast it on medium heat, stirring continuously until it turns golden brown. Be careful not to burn it. Once done, set it aside.
  3. Prepare the Masala:
  1. In another pan, heat 1 tablespoon ghee or butter.
  2. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon each of chana dal and urad dal. Roast until golden.
  4. Add curry leaves and chopped green chili (optional) for flavor.
  5. Sauté the Onion and Vegetables:
  1. Add chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn light brown.
  2. Add chopped vegetables (peas, carrot, capsicum) and mix well. Let them cook for 2–4 minutes, allowing them to soften slightly.
  3. Combine and Cook:
  1. Add the roasted semolina to the pan and mix it with the vegetables.
  2. Pour in 3 cups of water and stir well to avoid lumps.
  3. Add salt to taste. Cover the pan and let it steam for 3–4 minutes on low heat.
  4. Final Touch:
  5. Uncover the pan and give it a good mix. Add roasted groundnuts, coriander leaves, and any dry fruits of your choice.
  6. Serve:
  7. Your delicious Upma is ready! Serve it hot with coconut chutney or a dash of lemon juice for added zest.

Quick Tip: If you like your Upma richer, you can top it with a spoonful of ghee before serving.
